Two hosers, Derek and Matt, pick a Canadian cultural niche and run through its history and impact on the national and world stages, with some personal reflections, to try to determine what it means to be Canadian.

Our theme song is O Canada by Big Sugar.

Heeyyyy folks!

So we kind of let this podcast fall to the wayside in the busy times, mostly because agreeing on topics that both of us could make work without focusing too hard into a single niche like food or music.

We made the decision a while back that we would be fine doing episodes at least one of us could speak on, which opens up topics like David Cronenberg movies for Derek (which I know nothing about) and the like for discussion. Plus, it leaves us open for guests for obvious episodes like The Canadian Accent

What are some topics of Canadian culture, things crucial in their Canadianness and not just happening to be Canadian, that you would like for us to cover in this podcast’s eventual blessed revival?

Hey, it’s been a year since we launched this show and yet we still only have two episodes to our name.

This has been due to a number of factors, but we would eventually like to restart so I’m bumping this old post so I can learn what y’all want to hear

Happy legacy of colonialism day! #Canada150

I'd like to learn more about canadian politics - I feel like I don't know anything, even the basic stuff. Are there any books that you can recommend for me? Or any tips on how I can get started? I really don't know where to start. Thanks a lot :)

I took a Canadian Politics course at university last year. I found the textbook they assigned to us very enlightening:

The book is: Canadian Politics: Critical Approaches By Rand Dyck, Christopher Cochrane.

Additionally, I’ll be happy to answer any questions about Canadian Politics. I know quite a bit. ;)

The “How Canadians Govern Themselves” section of Discovering Canada: The Rights and Responsibility of Citizens was super helpful for me to get a very basic understanding. It’s the study guide for the Canadian Citizenship test, so its designed for those with 0 background in Canadian history or politics to gain a general, working knowledge of the system. The whole thing is also online for free as a pdf or audiobook.

Greetings from the Bay Area my friends to the North. A question this Monday morning: when is the next episode. Thanks and enjoy your day. I'm enjoying the episodes. I didn't even know what bag milk was until I heard your show. Cheers, Shaun ps: in Gord we trust.

Our two hosts have been afflicted with horrendous busy-ness! We are looking to try to nail down a good list of topics and by extension a working schedule some time in the next month

Thanks for listening!

Here's How To Donate To Gord Downie's Brain Cancer Research Fund

allthecanadianpolitics:

In light of lead singer Gord Downie’s terminal cancer diagnosis, The Tragically Hip has teamed up with Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital to fight brain cancer.

Downie was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumour, which is the common and aggressive type of tumour that starts in the brain.

Glioblastoma affects two to three people per 100,000 in Canada, the U.S., and Europe. Its exact cause is unknown, but current research is pointing to genetic mutation.

Sunnybrook says it treats about 250 people with glioblastoma per year.

Because of how rapidly the cancerous cells can reproduce, the average survival for most glioblastoma cases is less than one year, even with aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

The Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research will support research into new drugs, techniques, and therapies to fight “unbeatable” brain cancers.

You can make a donation to the fund online here.

I hope you’re ready for a solid half-hour of milk facts, bad polling methodology and at least one ghastly pun. Don’t skim this one! You’ll want to listen to it whole! Seriously though, multiple people asked for this one and you can’t say we don’t deliver. Call us the milk men.
